Having led worship in various settings for 30 years, I see similarities between corporate worship times and a spiritual direction session: together in God’s presence, we come with expectancy, mingling trusting praise with our longings. In spiritual direction, I find my experience and understanding of God expands and deepens as I encounter the richness of God’s relentless compassion. It is a deep joy to offer spiritual direction, holding compassionate space as we watch and listen together for God’s invitations and the movements of the Holy Spirit. Directees are experiencing greater freedom, love, joy, peace and hope as they ask big questions, learn to notice and express hidden or difficult emotions and desires, and even bravely journey through the deconstruction and reconstruction of their faith. Together, we make room for awe and mystery and continue to learn what it means to be “in Christ”.
